Chimneys
are not particularly complicated, but most people really don't understand
how they work. Knowing the basics will make sense of the whole process
of building or rebuilding a chimney and how to avoid common chimney-related
problems.
Most chimneys are masonry: constructed of brick, concrete blocks,
or stone. Cracks in the chimney crown or cap can cause the bricks
to spald and the joints to become loose. When this happens, if there
is minimal damage, we can replace the cap and tuck point the joints
or replace the mortar. However, in most cases where there is water
damage, it is best to rebuild the chimney and install new flues and
a new cap. When rebuilding, we add a concrete additive to the cap
for longer life.
Also available is mortar coloring for tuck pointing and specialty
rain caps. |
